Emerged from the efforts of young voluntary men and women whose sole aim was to united all Mauritanians living in Ohio under one umbrella, the organization revived the former Mauritanian Refugees Association. In the beginning of its existance, it adapted the name of the former MRA. Later after assessing by its board members that organization is beyond the refugees alone, its name changed from Mauritanian Refugees Association to Mauritanian Community Association to include not only refugees but any one who claims to be Mauritanian with no regard to their immigration status. It also encourages any person interested in its activities to join it and support its goals.
Recently, MCA underwent restructuring under a new team. Working on a time limit, the new team has set objectives that it wishes to achieve before the end of time its assigned to accomplish certain set goals.

At this moment the association attempts to meet at least twice a week to discuss progress and obstacles it faces, and to propose solutions and ways of operation.

Mauritanian Community Association is established in the aim of helping Mauritanians living in the United States in many aspects: human, social and cultural. It has plans to extend its assistance programs in the future to Mauritanians in refuge in Senegal and Mali as well as Mauritanians in need in the mainland. MCA objective is to assist the community in the following areas:

  • Humanitarian
  • Education and Culture
  • Job Training
  • Paperwork & Application filing
    1. In the humanitarian area, Mauritanians in need can benefit from services such as financial support in the event of financial, property, human losses independent of their will.
    2. As for education and culture, the association strives to reduce language barriers for the members to the minimum by helping and encouraging them to learn English free or at a lower cost. As members of the Mauritanian community are from different cultural backgrounds of which they are proud, the association plans to ensure the survival of the communities’ cultures via cultural activities, including, but not limited to, exhibitions, theaters, shows, social events, conferences, etc.
    3. The job training section encompasses services ranging from training, learning how to write resumes, to job hunting techniques.
    4. MCA intends to assist members of the community in their paperwork needs, including, but not limited to, filing immigration and other government applications and forms, document translations, and so forth.
      • With the help of volunteers – translators, etc – some of these programs would not require monetary efforts but human efforts

These ambitions, however, are only attainable if targeted individuals adhere to MCA in mass and are willing to pay for their annual membership fees. With a good number of membership counts, the association will be able to tap on other sources to fund its operations and execute its programs.
